    Local spectroscopy and atomic imaging of tunneling current, forces and dissipation on graphite

    Theory predicts that the currents in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and the attractive forces measured in atomic force microscopy (AFM) are directly related. Atomic images obtained in an attractive AFM mode should therefore be redundant because they should be \emph{similar} to STM. Here, we show that while the distance dependence of current and force is similar for graphite, constant-height AFM- and STM images differ substantially depending on distance and bias voltage. We perform spectroscopy of the tunneling current, the frequency shift and the damping signal at high-symmetry lattice sites of the graphite (0001) surface. The dissipation signal is about twice as sensitive to distance as the frequency shift, explained by the Prandtl-Tomlinson model of atomic friction.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted at Physical Review Letter

    Operation characteristics of piezoelectric quartz tuning forks in high magnetic fields at liquid helium temperatures

    Piezoelectric quartz tuning forks are investigated in view of their use as force sensors in dynamic mode scanning probe microscopy at temperatures down to 1.5 K and in magnetic fields up to 8 T. The mechanical properties of the forks are extracted from the frequency dependent admittance and simultaneous interferometric measurements. The performance of the forks in a cryogenic environment is investigated. Force-distance studies performed with these sensors at low temperatures are presented

    The linear-quadratic dependence of effect on the dose of ionizing radiation and its biophysical implications are considered. The estimation of the parameters of the response function and the derivation of the joint confidence region of the estimates are described. The method is applied to the induction of pink mutations inTradescantia which follows the linear-quadratic model. The statistical procedure is also suitable for other response functions

    Individualising drug dispensaries in a university hospital

    BACKGROUND: In hospitals and other healthcare institutions drugs are routinely stored in designated satellite areas on the wards. Often ad hoc decisions are made by clinicians and nurses regarding drug type and quantity to be stored. As a result the number of different drugs and drug packages in storage tends to increase, which may lead to inefficient drug handling and become a potential risk factor in the medication control process. Based on an extended analysis of drug inventories on three different wards it was hypothesized that a ward-individualised formulary (WIF) can halve the number of different drugs and drug packages in a drug dispensary and hence reduce bound capital, money lost through expired drugs, and facilitate safer drug handling. The interdisciplinary intervention described here took place on three 40-bed wards in a 700-bed university hospital housing patients in general internal medicine, haematology, nephrology and oncology. METHODS: A WIF was defined by including all drugs from the hospital formulary ordered at least three times in the past six months. A pharmacist, a nurse and a clinician reviewed the inclusion list of drugs and clinicians were strongly encouraged to prescribe drugs primarily from the WIF. Drugs excluded from the WIF were removed from the drug dispensaries and the number of included drug packages stored in the remote dispensaries was reduced according to their order history. Drug inventory on the wards was monitored from February 2004 to April 2006. RESULTS: The initial drug dispensary inventories on wards A, B and C consisted of 2031, 1667 and 1536 packages with 943, 897 and 831 different drugs valued at h 83 931, h 44 590 and h 57 285. respectively. After adjusting the drug dispensaries according to the WIF drug dispensary inventories on wards A, B and C consisted of 808 (-60%), 600 (-64%) and 485 (-68%) packages with 415 (-56%), 334 (-63%) and 376 (-55%) different drugs valued euro 28 012 (-67%), euro 10 381 (-77%) an euro 17 898 (-69%). The overall reductions the number of packages, the different drugs and the drug value were comparable (<50%) and remained low during the entire observation time (A: 18 months, B: 13 months, C: 8 months). CONCLUSION: Rearranging dispensaries by individualizing the drug inventory according to the needs of the ward by introducing a WIF is a valuable means to significantly (<50%) reduce [1] the number of drug packages, [2] the number of different drugs stored and [3] the capital bound drugs. The positive effects of the WIF are supported by the interdisciplinary interaction of the different professional groups involved in the medication process. The leaner drug dispensaries offer optimal basic conditions for introducing new IT-based systems to further increase the safety of the medication process

    Dose-effect relations and, specifically, cell survival curves are surveyed with emphasis on the interplay of the random factors — biological variability, stochastic reaction of the cell, and the statistics of energy deposition —that co-determine their shape. The global parameters mean inactivation dose, , and coefficient of variance, V, represent this interplay better than conventional parameters. Mechanisms such as lesion interaction, misrepair, repair overload, or repair depletion have been invoked to explain sigmoid dose dependencies, but these notions are partly synonymous and are largely undistinguishable on the basis of observed dose dependencies. All dose dependencies reflect, to varying degree, the microdosimetric fluctuations of energy deposition, and these have certain implications, e.g. the linearity of the dose dependence at small doses, that apply regardless of unresolved molecular mechanisms of cellular radiation action

    The groundstate configuration and the eigenmodes of two parallel two-dimensional classical atoms are obtained as function of the inter-atomic distance (d). The classical particles are confined by identical harmonic wells and repel each other through a Coulomb potential. As function of d we find several structural transitions which are of first or second order. For first (second) order transitions the first (second) derivative of the energy with respect to d is discontinuous, the radial position of the particles changes discontinuously (continuously) and the frequency of the eigenmodes exhibit a jump (one mode becomes soft, i.e. its frequency becomes zero).Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 5 ps figures, to appear in Phys.Rev.Let

    Site-specific force-distance characteristics on NaCl(001): Measurements versus atomistic simulations

    A scanning force microscope was used to measure the frequency shift above various atomic sites on a NaCl(001) surface at 7K. The data was converted to force and compared to the results of atomistic simulations using model NaCl and MgO tips. We find that the NaCl tip demonstrates better agreement in the magnitude of the forces in experiments, supporting the observation that the tip first came into contact with the sample. Using the MgO tip as a model of the originally oxidized silicon tip, we further demonstrate a possible mechanism for tip contamination at low temperatures.Peer reviewe

    Thermal preference of adult mosquitoes (Culicidae) and biting midges (Ceratopogonidae) at different altitudes in Switzerland

    Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are among the most important vectors of human and veterinary pathogens. For modelling the distribution of these pathogens, entomological aspects are essential, which in turn are highly dependent on environmental factors, such as temperature. In this study, mosquitoes and biting midges were sampled in multiple microclimates at two low (360, 480 meters above sea level, m.a.s.l.) and two high (1250, 1530 m.a.s.l.) altitude locations in Switzerland. Sets of various traps (CO2 -baited CDC, LED-UV, resting boxes, oviposition cups) equipped with dataloggers were placed in transects at five sites with similar vegetation at each location. Only the CDC and the LED-UV traps collected enough insects for analyses. Taxonomic diversity was greater for mosquitoes but lower for biting midges at lower altitudes. Both mosquitoes and biting midges had a thermal preference. Culicoides preferred the traps with warmer microclimate, especially at lower altitudes, whereas mosquito preferences depended on the species, but not on altitude. Relative humidity had a significant positive impact on catches of biting midges but not mosquitoes. To obtain better data on thermal preferences of resting and ovipositing vectors in addition to host seeking individuals, new and improved collecting methods are needed

    The effects of acute experimental hip muscle pain on dynamic single-limb balance performance in healthy middle-aged adults

    Middle-aged adults with painful hip conditions show balance impairments that are consistent with an increased risk of falls. Pathological changes at the hip, accompanied by pain, may accelerate pre-existing age-related balance deficits present in midlife. To consider the influence of pain alone, we investigated the effects of acute experimental hip muscle pain on dynamic single-limb balance in middle-aged adults. Thirty-four healthy adults aged 40–60 years formed two groups (Group-1: n\ua0=\ua016; Group-2: n\ua0=\ua018). Participants performed four tasks: Reactive Sideways Stepping (ReactSide); Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT); Step Test; Single-Limb Squat; before and after an injection of hypertonic saline into the right gluteus medius muscle (Group-1) or ∼5\ua0min rest (Group-2). Balance measures included the range and standard deviation of centre of pressure (CoP) movement in mediolateral and anterior-posterior directions, and CoP total path velocity (ReactSide, Squat); reach distance (SEBT); and number of completed steps (Step Test). Data were assessed using three-way analysis of variance. Motor outcomes were altered during the second repetition of tasks irrespective of exposure to experimental hip muscle pain or rest, with reduced SEBT anterior reach (−1.2\ua0±\ua04.1\ua0cm, P\ua0=\ua00.027); greater step number during Step Test (1.5\ua0±\ua01.7 steps, P\ua
